The 5th Annual Nite Brite Parade will take place on Wednesday, December 21st at 7p.m. in East Sacramento. The bike parade will begin on M Street between 40th & 41st. Participants will ride up and down each street, from 41st to 45th from J to M and end back on M between 40th & 41st. 80th Annual Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony happens TONIGHT

Join Governor Jerry Brown for the 80th Annual Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Wednesday, December 7, 2011, 4:45 p.m.
This year's tree is a 40-foot tall white fir tree donated by the U.S. Forest Service’s Institute of Forest Genetics in Camino, El Dorado County. It will be placed on the west lawn of the Capitol.

The tree will be decorated with 900 hand-crafted ornaments created by children and adults with developmental disabilities who receive services and support from the state’s development centers and 21 nonprofit regional centers. It will be illuminated by 10,000 ultra-low wattage LED lights.

Lincoln Caudle is an amazing 10 year old boy. Unfortunately, he suffers with life-threatening food allergies. His reactions are getting more severe. Even trace amounts of an allergen can cause his throat to close, his lips to swell and during his last reaction heart attack symptoms. A service dog can prevent these reactions by alerting to hidden allergens. Both Caudle children have food allergies.

This year, the event will be indoors at the Artisan Building. Vendors, artists, music, and a 4:15pm showing of John Beck & Don R. Lewis' film documentary "Worst in Show" about the annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest held in Petaluma.

Admission is $2 per person. The funds raised will benefit our local animal care service organizations.

Blog Spotlight: Poor Girl Eats Well

My mom requested Cookies & Cream Cheesecake Shots after both the recipe and the blog, Poor Girl Eats Well, were featured in the Sacramento Bee. I recently discovered the Poor Girl Eats Well blog too and have really taken a liking to it. I, too, have had to cut my food budget tremendously (in order to avoid down-sizing my shoe fund) so I've been trying to shop smarter and to be more creative with my meals i.e. try to create balanced meals with whatever food I happen to have on hand. I've been making much smaller grocery store trips too. I'm pretty much forced to eat whatever food I have on hand and I don't end up throwing out much that way. It's a win-win!

Anyway, Poor Girl Eats Well is filled with lots of creative ideas for feeding yourself {well} on a budget. I particularly like Kimberly's Hunger Challenge posts where she manages to feed herself on only $4.72 a day. You can barely get a drink at Starbucks for that! So, you can imagine, when my mom requested Cookies & Cream Cheesecake Shots, I was happy to oblige.

I don't actually have shot glasses (I know, what's wrong with me, right?) so I used sundae glasses and made more of a parfait than a "shot."

The verdict? Not quite cheesecake but if you are looking to fulfill a cheesecake craving on a budget, these puppies fit the bill! Mmm....

In addition, Kelly is teaming up with a few of SF's best carpenter/ artists from Engine Works & Builders Resources to turn one of the largest tents at Treasure Island Music Festival into a one-of-a-kind wooded wonderland....just like a real summer camp! Concert goers can make make dreamcatchers, DIY ponchos, terrariums, spirit animal masks, or friendship bracelets and more. The Midtown Modern Arts Festival will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2011 from Noon - 6:00pm. The event will occur on 20th Street between J & K Streets. The festival will be covering a broad spectrum of creativity including Music, Dance, Visual Art and every medium in-between.

The festival will feature a performance program on two separate stages: the KlickNation Stage and the MARRS Building Stage. The performing artists include the Sacramento Ballet, Capitol Stage, The Sacramento Philharmonic, The Sacramento Comedy Spot, Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet and many more. In addition to the performances there will be a variety of interactive art activities, including sugar skull decorating led by the La Raza Galería Posada. Attendees of all ages will also have the opportunity to explore a variety of innovative art process that will be demonstrated at the festival.

The goal of the festival is to create a venue for Midtown and the Sacramento region to show off what it does best, Art! I’m absolutely thrilled to announce Ana Apple’s new partnership with Never Felt Better, a kick-ass vegan shop opening up a brand-spankin’ new location next month in Midtown Sacramento.

As my line grows, I’ve been emphasizing organic fabrics, recycled or second-hand materials and environmentally-responsible practices. I recently (and happily) transitioned from vegetarian to vegan, vowing to omit animal products from my diet and lifestyle. The renewed energy and compassion I’ve experienced has inspired me to move Ana Apple even further into the realm of eco-friendliness by creating vegan-themed designs and working to exclusively source materials from companies that share a similar commitment to celebrating a cruelty-free, eco-conscious, indie-loving life.

So, of course, joining forces with Never Felt Better was a no-brainer! It will be the exclusive Midtown store to get the most popular Ana Apple goodies, from Recycle onesies and Cali Love youth hoodies to organic catnip toys!

The new location of ‘Sacramento’s raddest 100% owned and operated vegan shop’ will be opening in mid-October at 1910 P Street. The 2011 Mandarin Festival

The Mandarin Festival is a November destination in Auburn, California (northern part of the state). It is held annually the week-end before Thanksgiving. The Festival celebrates the harvest of locally grown Owari Satsuma Mandarin oranges in Placer County just 35 minutes north of Sacramento (the state capital). The Mandarin orange is truly a citrus experience!

For the pleasure of the attendees, there are three stages of live entertainment; hundreds of quality crafter's; a cooking stage with demonstrations by professional chefs; a very competitive recipe contest; an area devoted to children’s activities; and fifteen local citrus farmers selling their freshly harvested Mandarin oranges.

Local Love: Doughbot Donuts

This morning, I woke up at 5a.m. to experience my Sacramento's first "hip" donut bakery. Doughbot will be featuring creative flavors like Bacon Maple, Bacon Apple Fritter, Vanilla Bean, Cacao!, The Dude, and Red Raspberry. They also bake a variety of Vegan donuts. So far, "The Dude" is my favorite - a white Russian bavarian creme-filled donut with a vodka kahlua glaze, sprinkled with fresh ground coffee. Delicious.

It makes me giddy inside to see talented people in my town who are following their passion. And it doesn't hurt that they are baking up sweet deliciousness either.

Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival! Come out and be an artist or just enjoy the art! Bring some sort of cushion if you're going to make art.

Chalk-It-Up! to Sacramento is a nonprofit organization created to benefit children's arts education and art activities. Funds are raised through an annual chalk art festival held each Labor Day Weekend since 1991.

Artwork
The festival features over 200 sidewalk paintings created at the festival by local artists who donate their time, energy, and talent. These concrete masterpieces are left on the sidewalk for the public to enjoy throughout the month of September. The pieces are done with soft chalk pastel mixed with water. The squares are divided into five categories:

Sponsored Squares
The numbered squares on the perimeter of the park are sponsored by local businesses and organizations. Artists volunteer to create chalk drawings for their sponsors. The basic sponsorship fee is $150 for a one stard sidewalk square, but higher levels of sponsorship are available: Major Sponsors ($300 and above), Signature Sponsors ($500 and above), Platinum Sponsors ($1000 and above), and Diamond Sponsors ($5,000 and up. Only 2 spots available)!

Personal Squares
A personal square is available for those who are interested in creating their own masterpiece. The squares can be purchased for $10.00 and the price includes a box of artist's chalk (12). Squares can be purchased at the Chalk Booth during the festival.

Community Squares
The community square area is free and open for the public to create their own sidewalk artwork. Chalk is supplied by the festival. Artists must keep the community chalk as well as their artwork within the confines of the community squares. We request that children be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Born in Sacramento
The Born in Sacramento area is reserved especially for native Sacramentans of all ages to make their marks. Officer Henry Luckie sponsors this area.

Entertainment
During the festival local bands, musicians, and other performers entertain the artists and the public. These performers donate their time for this festival. A list of performance times is posted near both of the stage areas.

Tree Tour of McKinley Park

McKinley Park was originally known as East Park, and was established by the Sacramento City Railway Co. on land which was formerly a slough of the American River. The Railway Co. helped landscape the area, built a bandstand for concerts and dancing, and set up refreshment stands. Some of the older trees, such as the fan palms, date to this period. However, the venture did not pay

off and the Railway Co. eventually sold the land to the City for $12,500 in 1901.

The park was renamed McKinley Park in honor of President William McKinley, who had been assassinated in 1901. The Clunie Clubhouse and Swimming Pool was added in 1936 from a $150,000 bequest by Florence Turton Clunie. The park today is arguably the most popular and most visited in the city, with a jogging track, 8 lighted tennis courts, pond, and children's playground attracting thousands of adults and kids every year. The park's Rose Garden is also a very popular attraction, and hosts weddings nearly every weekend in the spring and
summer months.
